Abstract
1,186,354. Stud and socket fastenings. J. S. C. EKINS. 5 Sept., 1967 [26 July, 1966], No. 33542/66. Heading E2B. Knock-down jointing means comprises a first member containing a keyhole shape aperture extending through the member between opposed faces thereof, said aperture having a first wider portion 4 and a second narrower portion 6 extending longitudinally from one end of the wider portion, the side walls of the second portion 6 being divergent between the opposed faces of the member to give said portion a tapering cross section and a second member 10 having divergent walls 14 complementary to at least one region of the divergent walls of the aperture second portion, said second member being locatable within the wider portions of the first member aperture and slidable therefrom into the second portion to engage together the two members at the regions of their divergent walls to make the joint. In the construction shown the two portions of the key hole-shaped aperture are of substantially rectangular shape and the second member is in the form of a flat sided wedge. The divergent walls of both the aperture second portion and the second member 10 are provided with ribs 16 which when the second member is in the aperture second portion engage each other to lock the second member in the aperture second portion. Each member is provided with a plurality of countersunk screw holes for connecting the members to the components which are to be fastened together. As shown the two members are made as a single moulding, the member 10 being contained in the moulding in the aperture first portion, the two members being connected together by gates 12 that can be easily broken; the moulding as shown has two key hole apertures each of which contains a second member 10. In an alternative construction the second member 10 instead of being a flat sided wedge is a frustrum of a cone with a single countersunk screw hole through it and the aperture through the first member is suitably modified. The members are again made as a single moulding but in this case the moulding has four key hole shaped apertures and four second members, the second members being connected to the side of the first member by gates which are easily broken.
