Abstract

1,186,292. Garment with a fluid heating system. C. H. HANKS. 16 July, 1968 [28 Aug., 1967], No. 33763/68. Heading A3V. [Also in Division F4] A garment 22 has a low pressure fluid heating system, comprising a tank 140 with an outlet port 172 and an inlet port 174 and a burner (142), Fig. 11 (not shown), connected to a fuel supply 144, both of which are mounted in an insulated carrier 132, a pump 32 to circulate the fluid in the tank 140 through distribution valves 52 and coils such as 46, 48, 50, 50<1>, 66, 56, 56<1> and a return manifold 78 to the return port 174 of the tank, and valved coupling means 120 between the distribution valve 52 and pump 32 and 120<1> between the return manifold and return port to permit ready uncoupling of the burner and tank from the rest of the heating system without loss of fluid. The garment has coils 48, 46, 50, 50<1> made of flexible tubing of rubber, aluminium or copper, attached to it between two layers of cloth such as canvas duck, coil 66 attached to a hat 28 and sinuous coils 56, 56<1> attached to lower leg extensions 26, 26<1> buttoned on to the garment 22. Water with an anti-freeze is contained in tank 140 heated by a burner (142), Fig. 11 (not shown), through a copper heating tube 168 with aluminium fins 169. Burner (142), Fig. 11 (not shown), is supplied with kerosene, alcohol or preferably propane to a control valve 160 from a tank 144 made of copper or aluminium. The heated liquid from the tank is driven by hand pump 32 to a valve manifold 78 on which are mounted four needle valves (70, 72, 74 and 76), Fig. 6 (not shown), which controls the liquid supply respectively to coil 46, coils 48, 50, 50<1>, coil 60 and coils 56, 56<1>. The liquid is then returned to the tank through a return manifold valve (54), Fig. 5 (not shown), and that outlet port (120<1>) which is coupled to the heating unit 30. The entire heating unit 30 is carried in a bag 132 slung from a strap 134. The tank 140 is mounted inside a casing 136 made of aluminium and lined with an insulating lining (146), Fig. 11 (not shown), such as rock wool. An oven with sheet metal sides 150 wrapped with asbestos lining extends up from the metal base 148 to the top of an insulated oven door 138. The heating tank 140 has a short metal filling nipple (176), Fig. 8 (not shown), and is provided with a safety plug (178), Fig. 8 (not shown), of steel wool, a temperature gauge (180), Fig. 8 (not shown), and a thermostat (182), Fig. 10 (not shown), which fits into a well (184) extending into the tank 140 and is filled with the same liquid as the heating system and has a bellows 188 which expands and causes contact 186 to engage and complete a circuit with a buzzer (196), Fig. 11 (not shown), when the liquid becomes hot. The pump and heating unit may be quickly disconnected from the rest of the outfit by valve snap couplings (120, 120<1>), Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). The garment may be an outer garment or it may be a vest to be worn under hunting clothes or overalls. The hat can be made of felt, aluminium, plastics or any one of numerous other materials utilized in hats. An insulating lining of asbestos or cloth is provided.
