1,186,117. Treating kaolin. GEORGIA KAOLIN CO. 22 Dec., 1967 [30 Dec., 1966], No. 58539/67. Heading C1A. A kaolinite of improved brightness and whiteness is produced by slurrying the degritted crude clay and bleaching with a hydrosulphite bleach (sodium hexametaphosphate may be used as a dispersing agent in forming the slurry); the bleached clay is redispersed and subjected to attrition grinding, and fractionated to recover a fraction of more than 90% by weight below 2Á spherical diameter; this fraction is redispersed and selectively flocculated, preferably using a polyacrylamide agent, at an alkaline pH; the flocculated portion is recovered and bleached with a peroxide (e.g. H2O2) at an elevated temperature (e.g. 60-70‹ C.), and the peroxide-bleached clay may be further bleached with hydrosulphite at an acid pH before drying at an elevated temperature (e.g. about 90‹ C.).
