Abstract
1,264,190. Oxidizing clay. FREEPORT SULPHUR CO. 9 Oct., 1969, No. 49627/69. Heading C1A. The reflectance of clay is increased by the oxidation of a dispersed aqueous clay slurry at a pH of at least 5À5. Suitable oxidizing agents for this process are sodium hypochlorite, chlorine in sodium hydroxide, sodium hypobromite, bromine in sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide. The process is usually carried out between 0 and 100‹ C. The clay slurry contains generally 0À05 to 0À5% by weight, based on the dry clay basis, of dispersant, such as sodium silicate, tetrasodium pyrophosphate or sodium tripolyphosphate. The clay may then be reduced or bleached, for instance with sodium dithionite.
