Abstract
1,186,009. Heat-treating and decarburizing steel. KONINKLLIKE NEDERLANDSCHE HOOGOVENS EN STAALFABRIEKEN N.U. July 10, 1967 [July 13, 1966], No.31582/67. Headings C7A and C7D. In the manufacture of electrical quality strip a steel containing in percentage by weight:- C up to 0‹15 Si up to 2 Al up to 0À7 Mn 0À15 to 0À6 P up to 0À06 Fe and impurities balance is hot rolled, and subjected to a decarburizing anneal to reduce the carbon content to not more than 0À01%. Concurrently with or subsequent to the decarburization the strip is annealed to increase the grain size to not less than ASTM 3, followed by cold rolling and by a recrystallization annealing under such conditions of time and temperature that a grain size finer than ASTM 5 is obtained. In the preferred practice the initial anneal is carried out with the strip in the form of an open coil at not less than 600‹ C. in an atmosphere of nitrogen containing not less than 5% by volume of hydrogen, the atmosphere being initially moistened to a dew-point between 0‹ C. and 35‹C.; when the carbon content of the steel has been reduced to 0À005% the annealing is continued in the same atmosphere in a dry state at not less than 800‹ C. until the desired grain size is reached. After de-scaling the steel is cold rolled by at least 40%, and is then in a closed coil annealed in the range 600‹ -700‹ C. for a sufficiently short time to avoid any secondary grain growth.
