Abstract

1,186,004. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 4 Sept., 1967 [5 Sept., 1966], No. 39662/66. Heading G6C. A fuel element comprises metallic fissile material sheathed by inner and outer containments, at least two substances which emit detectable fission products being provided between the inner and outer containments, the first substance being capable of rapid reaction with moisture and the second substance being substantially more resistant to reaction with moisture. The first substance may be unalloyed uranium or a uranium alloy containing 200 to 500 p.p.m. of iron and 500 to 1200 p.p.m. of aluminium, while the second substance may be a binary alloy of uranium containing 12% by weight of molybdenum or 45% by weight of zirconium. The substances may be in the form of a duplex disc located between end caps closing the ends of the inner and outer containments. The fissile material may be natural uranium metal sheathed by inner and outer containments of zirconium alloy. In the event of the outer containment becoming breached during use in a boiling water reactor, fission products are emitted, firstly, at a sufficiently high rate to enable the existence of the breach to be detected and, secondly, for a sufficiently long period to enable the fuel element to be located, but insufficient to seriously contaminate the reactor coolant.
