Abstract
1,201,051. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 2 Aug., 1968 [4 Sept., 1967], No. 40365/67. Heading G6C. A fuel element assembly comprises a cluster of spaced, parallel, sheathed fuel rods having substantially uniform abundance of fissile isotope per unit volume, the rods being arranged in inner and outer groups with the rods of the outer group being tubular for conducting coolant flow and of greater girth than the rods of the inner group which are solid. As shown, a fuel element assembly 4 comprises an outer group of tubular rods 5a and an inner group of solid rods 5b, all of uranium oxide equally enriched in the fissile isotope U 235 to 1À4 C 0 and sheathed in Zr alloy. The assembly is located in a tube 1 for conducting light water coolant and extending through a calandria tube 2 of a core tank containing heavy water moderator 3. The tubular fuel rods may be of greater mass than the solid fuel rods but where they are of substantially the same mass, they present a lesser thickness of material to thermalized neutrons from the moderator so that more thermalized neutrons enter the remaining rods of the cluster than would be the case for solid rods.
