Abstract
1,185,914. Printed circuits. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 23 March, 1967 [28 March, 1966], No. 13855/67. Heading H1R. A ceramic substrate wafer for printed circuits has predetermined " dinked " lines of weakness formed therein before firing whereby the fired wafer may be readily broken into smaller discrete wafers with well-defined edges. The " dinked " lines are grooves or partial cuts to a depth of 0À2 to 0À5 of the thickness of the wafer and define at least 70% of the perimeter of each discrete wafer. Before breaking the substrate may be glazed and a plurality of printedcircuit patterns formed thereon by known means so that each discrete wafer will carry a single pattern. The wafer 10 may be prepared as shown, Fig. 1, with dinked lines 18 and fully cut lines 17. The ceramic wafer may be an alumina substrate formed of 95À5% Al 2 O 3 , 3À2% SiO 2 , 1À1% MgO, 0À2% CaO, ground to 325 mesh blended by ball milling with organic binder and a volatile diluent. The binder may consist of 2À5 parts polyvinyl butyral, 1 part plasticizer (e.g. triethylene glycol hexate), 0À2 parts methyl agent (alkyl ether polyethylene glycol), 20 parts vehicle (tuolene) to 76 parts by weight ceramic particulate.
