Abstract

1,185,671. Heating metal tubes &c. by passage of current. INSTYTUT METALURGII ZELAZA IM. STANISLAWA STASZICA. 15 Feb., 1967 [15 Feb., 1966], No. 7169/67. Heading H5H. In the heat treatment of metal tubing, the tubing 1 is fed continuously through two axially spaced electrodes 5, 6 between which a voltage is applied by a transformer 11, the resulting current flow through the section of tubing between the electrodes 5, 6 raising its temperature to between 1000‹ and 1150‹ C. The tubing is subsequently water-cooled by a ring 8 having nozzles 9 preferably located before the second electrode 6 so that the latter is not subjected to high temperatures. For high efficiency the tube is surrounded, between the electrodes, by an insulating guard 7. The tubing 1 is fed by rollers 4 driven by a motor 20 which also rotates the first electrode 5, connection to this electrode being made through a liquid connection 15. Alternatively both electrodes may be stationary and the tubing rotated.
