Abstract
1,185,307. Graft copolymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 1 March, 1968 [10 March, 1967; 20 Sept., 1967], Nos. 42896/67 and 42899/67. Divided out of 1,185,306. Heading C3G. A graft copolymer comprises a substrate of a diene rubber containing from 40 to 100% molar of units from at least one conjugated 1,3-diene monomer and from 60 to 0% of units from at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a superstrate containing randomly copolymerized units of acrylonitrile and at least one conjugated aromatic olefin where the molar ratio of acrylonitrile to other monomers is between 2 and 9, wherein the superstrate also contains a minor amount (i.e. a molar amount less than the molar amount of aromatic olefin) of at least one other copolymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer selected from maleimide and its N-substituted derivatives and norbornene and its derivatives including methylene norbornane. Suitable aromatic olefins include styrene, substituted styrenes, 1-vinyl naphthalene, 2-vinyl thiophene, 3-vinyl phenanthrene, 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine and N- vinyl carbazole; The N-substituted maleimide is, e.g. N-o-chlorophenyl or N-phenyl maleimide. The superstrate may also contain a minor amount of copolymerized units of other monomers, e.g. an alkyl methacrylate. In the examples, acrylonitrile, styrene, or alphamethyl styrene, and N-o-chlorophenyl maleimide are grafted on to polybutadiene in latex form. The graft copolymers produced are stabilized prior to being blended with an acrylonitrilestyrene copolymer or a terpolymer produced from the graft monomers employed.
