Abstract

1,185,306. Graft copolymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 March, 1967 [24 March, 1966], No. 13071/66. Heading C3G. A graft copolymer comprises a substrate of a diene rubber containing from 40 to 100% molar of units from at least one conjugated 1,3-diene monomer and from 0 to 60% of units from at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a superstrate containing randomly distributed units of acrylonitrile and at least one aromatic olefin, the molar ratio of units of acrylonitrile to units of aromatic olefin in the superstrate being between 2 and 9. Specified aromatic monomers are styrene, substituted styrenes, 2-vinyl thiophene, 3-vinyl phenanthrene, N-vinyl carbazole, 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine, acenaphthylene, coumarone and indene. The superstrate may contain a minor amount of other monomers, e.g. a maleimide, a norbornene derivative or an alkyl methacrylate. In examples, a butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber or polybutadiene latex is grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile, some of the styrene and, in some cases, the acrylonitrile, being added partly in the initial charge and partly as the polymerization proceeds. The graft copolymers produced are blended with acrylonitrile-styrene resins.
