Abstract

1,218,183. Metallated polymers and graft copolymers thereof. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 19 April, 1968 [22 April, 1967], No. 18650/67. Headings C3G and C3P. A graft copolymer comprises an elastomeric polymer having a second-order transition temperature below 15‹ C. and containing allylic hydrogen atoms on to which are grafted two or more chains of a polymer having a first- or second-order transition temperature greater than 50‹ C., the grafted chains of polymer comprising from 2À5 to 90% by weight of the graft copolymer. The graft copolymer is prepared by reacting a solution in an organic solvent of the elastomeric polymer with a ditertiary amine complex of an organolithium compound and then reacting the metallated elastomeric polymer with a monomer or polymer to yield a graft copolymer. Specified elastomeric polymers are polybutadiene, polyisoprene, polypiperylene, polycyclohexadiene, polyalkenomers and methyl;substituted derivatives thereof, isobutylene - isoprene copolymers, unsaturated ethylene-propylene terpolymers, and copolymers of the aforementioned dienes. Suitable graft monomers are vinyl aromatic compounds, cyclohexadiene and derivatives thereof, alkylene sulphides, aldehydes, acrylates, methacrylates, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, isocyanates, N-alkyl or aryl-maleimides and alkylene oxides. The metallated polymer may be reacted with e.g. CO 2 or phosgene prior to being coupled with another polymer. Examples are given of (a) metallation of polybutadiene with N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP> - tetramethyl ethylenediamine and n-butyl lithium followed by (i) carboxylation of the product with CO 2 or (ii) grafting the product with styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, N-phenyl maleimide or an ethylene-ethyl acrylate copolymer, (b) metallation of polyisoprene as in (a) followed by grafting with styrene and (c) metallation of an ethylenepropylene-ethylidene norbornene terpolymer as in (a), followed by (i) carboxylation of the metallated polymer and curing with MgO or (ii) grafting with styrene.
