Abstract

1,204,476. Graft polymers and compositions containing them. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 Sept., 1967 [7 Oct., 1966], No. 45052/66. Heading C3G. A thermoplastic composition based on methacrylonitrile and a diene rubber, containing 40 to 100% molar of at least one conjugated 1,3-diene monomer and from 60 to 0% of at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer, is (1) a graft copolymer comprising a superstrate of an essentially homogeneous methacrylonitrile polymer containing up to 10% molar of one or more comonomers and a substrate of a diene rubber containing units from a 1,3-diene hydrocarbon, the amount of unsaturated nitrile units (if any) present in the rubber being less than 5% by weight of the rubber, (2) a blend with a compatible resin of a graft copolymer comprising a superstrate of a methacrylonitrile polymer containing up to 10% molar of one or more comonomers and a substrate of a diene rubber, or (3) a blend of a methacrylonitrile polymer containing up to 10% molar of one or more comonomers with a compatible graft copolymer having a substrate of a diene rubber. In a modification of (1), the graft copolymer comprises a superstrate of an essentially homogeneous copolymer of methacrylonitrile and up to 10% molar of at least one comonomer (other than an ester of an olefinically unsaturated acid) and a substrate of a diene rubber containing from 40 to 100% molar of at least one conjugated 1,3-diene monomer and 60 to 0% of at least one comonomer. The methacrylonitrile polymer superstrate in (1) and (2) and the polymer in (3) may comprise, as comonomer, styrene and/or alpha-methyl styrene, or maleimide or an N-aryl maleimide. The compatible resin in (2) is, e.g. a methacrylonitrile polymer or a copolymer of acrylonitrile. In examples, blends are prepared comprising (a) polymethacrylonitrile and a graft polymer prepared from polybutadiene, acrylonitrile and styrene, or isobutene, (b) a methacrylonitrile-methyl methacrylate copolymer and a graft polymer prepared from polybutadiene, acrylonitrile and isobutene and (c) a graft polymer prepared from polybutadiene and methacrylonitrile and polymethacrylonitrile, or an acrylonitrile-styrene copolymer.
