Abstract

1,185,271. Securing rails to sleepers. BRITISH RAILWAYS BOARD. 18 Jan., 1968, No. 2835/68. Addition to 1042991. Heading E1G. In a rail fastening comprising a forked plate spring 3, reaction hoop 4 and back support 7, wherein the rail foot 6 is laterally located in the sleeper 2 by a shoulder 9 engaging a portion 10 of an insulator 11, as in Specification 1169715, the laterally abutting surfaces are curved in plan view along the arc of a circle. At the ends of the arc the parts are shaped to diverge gradually. The insulator shown has an upstanding flange 12 and honeycomb formations 15, while the shoulder 9 is reinforced by a plate 16 of steel, nylon or glass fibre. In a modification the insulator is undercut where it engages the rail edge to promote resilience. The sleeper 2 may be of concrete reinforced - e.g. down to boundary 18 - by metallic or non-metallic fibres, or may be of concrete modified by plastics, rubber or bitumen.
