Abstract

1,185,227. Laminates. CONSOLIDATED PAPER (BAHAMAS) Ltd. 15 March, 1967 [15 March, 1966], No. 12253/67. Heading B5N. A laminated non-woven fabric-like material of high water absorbency and high wet strength comprises outer liners in the form of continuous webs of soft, fibrous material of high water absorbency and a central continuous reinforcing film of a thermoplastic material which is bonded without intermediate adhesive to said liners, said theremoplastic material having a high initial resistance to disintegration upon contact with water and strength characteristics whereby the laminated material has a wet tensile strength of at least twice the combined wet tensile strength of the outer liners before they are combined with the central film and wherein the film has a basis weight of 1 to 10 lbs. per 432,000 sq. inches, and the laminated material has a basis weight of 10 lbs. to 100 lbs. per 432,000 sq. inches. The liners are preferably of paper and may contain cellulose, regenerated cellulose or cellulose derivatives of wood or cotton seed origin. Specified thermoplastic materials are polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene-ethyl acrylate copolymers, ethylene-vinylacetate copolymers, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol and hydrolysed polyvinyl acetate. The laminate may be made by passing the three layers through the nip of a pair of heated rollers which are optionally embossed or by bonding the liners to the surfaces of a freshly extruded film of the thermoplastic material. The products may be used for sanitary or cleaning purposes. Examples are given.
