Abstract
1,184,749. Electrolytic removal of electroplating. BERGISCHE METALLWARENFABRIK DILLENBERG & CO. K.G. Oct.18, 1968, No.49487/68. Heading C7B. A bath for the electrolytic removal or stripping of Cr, Ni or Au electro-plating from Cu, Cu alloy, Ag, Zn or Ti bases comprises in aqueous solution a salt of thiocyanic acid (e.g. ammonium thiocyanate) and one or more phenols selected from mono-, di- and tri-hydric phenols and homologues thereof. Specified phenols are:- phenol, dihydroxybenzenes (catechol, resorcinol, and quinol), trihydroxy benzenes (pyrogallol, phloroglucinol and hydroxyquinol), cresol, thymol, xylenol and their nitrocompounds such as nitrophenol dinitrophenol and nitrocatechol. The pH of the bath is found to be between 6 and 6À5. Using the base as anode, a minimum anode current density of 8 amps/dm<SP>2</SP> is applied using a stainless steel cathode, the treatment being carried out at 20-60‹ C. A waterrepellant layer, which does not transmit current, forms on the base during the stripping process and prevents erosion of the base. The protective layer can be removed later by dipping the base in NaOH solution.
