Abstract

1,184,717. Ball mills; mixing &c. GKN SANKEY Ltd. 5 Aug., 1968 [3 May, 1967 (3)], Nos. 20547/67; 20493/67 and 20569/67. Headings B1C and B2A. [Also in Division B5] Powdered plastics material is fluidized and comminuted in a ball mill before feeding to a rotary moulding machine. The various components of a moulding mixture are fed via hoppers 10, 11, 12 into a tube 14 where the material is fluidized by injection of a gas at 15. The tube passes through a vibrator 16 and this part of the tube contains metal balls which are retained by a screen, while the comminuted and inter mixed material passes out, as a fluidized powder, into a moulding machine. This has rotatable moulds 20, 21 rotated about orthogonal axis 22 and 23. The moulding material passes from a conduit 17 into a hollow rotating support shaft 24 and thence through short arms 25 into the moulds. The moulds are rotated slowly either in an oven or by using a heating fluid supplied to double-walled moulds. The fluidizing gas is nitrogen pre-heated by a heat exchanger 26 and recirculated. The heat exchanger may also be used for quick cooling at the end of a moulding operation, and separate hot or cold gas supplies may be maintained. A conductive filler may be used, heated by an electric field, and removed magnetically before moulding.
