Abstract

1,106,760. Ball mills; wet grinding; batch mixers. J. M. A. BRIZON. 20 Dec., 1965 [19 Dec., 1964], No. 53807/65. Headings B1C and B2A. A mill for grinding inks and pigments comprises a container 2, Fig. 1, having vertical parallel walls 2b, 2c together with one or more horizontal rotatable shafts 3 perpendicular to the walls, bearing agitating arms 3a. The distance between two vertical parallel walls is not more than one quarter the height of the container, and the thickness of the arm, or sum of the thicknesses of the arms is not less than half of said distance. The container is substantially filled wilth balls. In one embodiment the ends of the casing are cooled by supplying water via pipes 10, 11 to the gap 9 between the walls. The balls may be of steatite, hardened glass or steel, and the arms 3a, shaft 3 and container walls may be lined with p.t.f.e. Further embodiments comprise groups of mills separated by cooled partitions. Fig. 3. A mechanism comprising a worm screw 7, Fig. 1, and a crank 8 permit rotation of the container for loading and unloading via a plug 14. A hopper 16 or a mixer 26, Fig. 4, with a helical paddle 29 and a reduced pressure steam jacket or electrical heating system may be provided below the mill. A number of mills may also be arranged to intercommunicate, one above another, the arms being diamond-shaped in cross-section. The container is lined with hard metal plates, or juxtaposed rods, and the arms which have a diamond-shaped cross-section and the shaft are also sheathed with hard metal.
