Articles (not shown) are discharged from a conveyer belt by an arm 1 after a predetermined interval from being detected by radiation means (not shown). The latter feeds in an electrical pulse at 22, 23. This develops with delay a pulse in a coil 9, and with greater delay, a pulse in a coil 11. The coil-9-pulse actuates a fluid valve 7 which actuates a fluid valve 5 to cause extension of fluid cylinder and piston device 4. The coil-13-pulse similarly results in a valve 6 applying fluid pressure to the other end of the device 4. This cushions the end of the extension stroke and brings about the discharging movement of the arm 1.
