Abstract
1,184,038. Latch fastenings. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 20 Feb., 1969 [27 Feb., 1968], No. 9236/69. Heading E2A. An operator arrangement for a vehicle body door latch includes a generally longitudinally movable and rotatable operator 30, a generally longitudinally movable member 26 for connection to a locking lever of the door latch for moving the locking lever between locking and unlocking positions and a coupling between the operator and the shiftable member which enables unitary longitudinal bodily movement of the operator and the shiftable member together in one rotational position of the operator relative to the shiftable member, and provides a loss motion connection between the operator and the member in another rotational position of the operator to permit generally longitudinal movement of the operator without moving the member. In the construction shown the coupling consists of a double headed abutment pin 38 which extends through the lower end portion of the operator 30 and slots in the shiftable member 26 which receives the end portion of the pin 38. The slots consists of a pair of vertical disposed slots 40 and a pair of circumferentially extending horizontal slots 42 each of which extends in the same rotated direction from the lower end portion of a respective one of the slots 40 thus when the pin is in the slots 40, the lost motion connection is provided between the operator and the member 26 whereas when the pin is in the slots 42 movement of the operator causes movement of the member 26. The member 26 is connected to the locking lever by a rod 22 which is connected to the member 26 by a pivot pin 24. The operator has a control button 28 connected to one end portion 30 and disposed on the sash 30 adjacent the lower end of the button is a plastic stop 48 which in use can engage the inner panel 36 of a door 12 to limit upward movement of the button before the shank of the pin 38 engages the other end of the slot 40; surrounding the member 26 is a spring 44 the upper end of which seats on a flange 46 of the member 26 and the lower end portion of which is hooked over the shank of the pin 38, the spring normally biassing the pin 38 downwardly within the slots 40 and counterclockwise within the slots 42 to hold the shank of the pin 38 at the junctures of the slots 40 and 42. From the depressed position of the button 24 upward movement of the button without rotation, only moves the pin 38 within the slot 40 by compressing the spring and thus the locking lever is not moved. To move the locking lever to its unlocking position the button 28 is' first rotated clockwise to dispose the pin 38 in the slots 42 after which upward movement of the button shifts the member 26 upwardly and with it the locking lever to unlocking position. When the button 28 is released the spring 44 rotates it and the operator so that the pin is disposed at the juncture of the solt and the button can then be depressed without first being rotated thereby to move the locking lever to the locking position.
