Abstract
118,371. Wingfield, B. R. Nov. 16, 1917. Spring supports; adjusting for position; selfalining bearings.-The shafts of reducing or multiplying toothed gearing for turbines, electric generators, ships' propellers, &c., run in spring- supported self-alining bearings each comprising a flat-bottomed bush C formed with a rounded ridge C<2> resting on the centre of a spring plate A supported only at its ends B<3>. The bush fits closely against flat vertical guide surfaces F in a housing B mounted on a plate E, which is seated on a cylindrical surface in a casing G. The bearing is adjusted laterally by wedges D which are seated on cylindrical surfaces H. Recesses with shoulders E<2>, G<1>, Fig. 1<a>, prevent axial movement of the bearing. A spring I, or a plate similar to the plate A engages the cap of the bearing. A clearance at J allows the bush to tilt on the projection C<2>. In a modification, the housing B is omitted, the plate A being supported directly by the plate E, and similar spring plates mounted on the wedges D engage spherical projections at the sides of the bush. Springs are placed under the nuts on the bolts K, which pass through the bush, to allow the bearing to tilt.
