Abstract

118,346. Harvey, L. C., and Morgan Crucible Co. Sept. 8, 1917. Crucible furnaces.-An inner cover k is constructed of two parts which can be withdrawn into recesses as shown to allow the crucible to be removed. The inner cover has a central opening, and the escape flue opens at from the space between the inner and outer covers. The hinged bottom s of the furnace is formed with a dish for the reception of spilt metal, having ribs to form notches in the solidified metal so as to facilitate the breaking up of the metal when removed. The furnace has an inner lining of high-grade refractory material and a filling of low-grade refractory material between this and the outer metal casing, which is formed of plates between corner pieces. Air spaces n are left between the inner lining and the filling. A hearth may be formed in tho outlet flue on which ingots or metal can be preheated. The space around the crucible stand u is preferably packed with nodules of quartz or other refractory material. The furnace may be fired by solid, liquid, or gaseous fuel, apertures as indicated in dotted lines at i being provided for the blast or for the gas or oil fuel.
