Abstract

118,331. Monie, M. M. Aug. 25, 1917. Mud-guards.-In order to prevent the puncturing of the tyres of the rear wheels of motorcycles, motor-cars, &c., by nails &c. that have been caused to stand more or less erect by the passage over them of the front wheels, such nails &c. are laid flat by means of a flap of rubber, rubber and canvas, or other weatherproof material, carried from the mud-guard, footboard, a frame member, or the axle of the vehicle, in front of the rear wheel with its lower end just clear of the ground and in such a manner that it vibrates when the machine is running. Figs. 1 and 4 show the invention as applied to the footboard of a motor-car. The rubber &c. flap H is adjustably clamped in a frame E, which is pivoted at A' to a depending member A, rigidly fixed to the footboard, and works between springs J, K. In a modification, adapted for cycles, a member corresponding to the member A is adjustably clamped to a three-side frame secured to clips, which take over the chain stavs. In another modification, the flap is connected by a scroll spring to the lower end of a telescopic support, the upper end of which is supported from a bracket under the footboard by another scroll spring. Figs. 10 and 11 show the flap H suspended by a scroll spring from a plate, which is adjustably clamped to the end of the mud-guard of a cycle. A roller may be fitted in the lower end of the flap.
