Abstract

1,183,149. Packaging sterile liquids; filling bottles; cartons. TETRA PAK A.B. 20 Feb., 1968 [6 March, 1967], No. 8272/68. Headings B8C, B8P and B8T. A flexible container is sterilized by an agent which enters the container through a pipe engaging the container opening of the container then being filled with sterile liquid through the same pipe and the opposite sides of the container's neck are sealed together, prior to disengagement of the pipe. Two coaxial pipes may be used, the inner of which feeds in the sterilizing medium and then the contents and the outer makes sealing contact with the container mouth. In the embodiments shown, telescoping coaxial pipes 3, 4 are used, the inner of which descends to the base of the container and rises as the container fills. The outer pipe 4 of one arrangement, engages the mouth 13 of a container 1 e.g. a plastics bottle, a gaseous or liquid sterilizing agent entering the bottle through the . lowered inner pipe 3, Fig. 1b, and leaving through the outer tube 4. For gaseous agents, the bottle may be upside down. Sterilized liquid is then introduced and when filling is complete, pipe 3 retracts and sealing blocks 6, 7 seal the neck. After severing, the waste part 10 is removed as the pipes rise together and is ejected by air blasts down the pipe 4. Any trapped liquid may be blown out through connections between the pipes (not shown) back through the pipe 4. The package may have a cut 16 above the seal, Fig. 2 (not shown), to facilitate opening. In an alternative arrangement, carbons 17, Fig. 4, are filled by the same method through pipes 24 and 26, the cartons being formed from a blank, Fig. 5, the upper portion 19 of which corresponds to the waste portions 10, Fig. le. Folding in of the closure is facilitated by score lines 30. A modification is to connect the container to a pressure source, to maintain sterility without the necessity of a leakproof seal between the outer pipe and container.
