Reflux to a distillation apparatus, wherein vapours rise up chamber 1 and through apertures 4 in hood 3 to a liquid/vapour separator 2 and a condenser (not shown), is controlled by an external divider valve 5 comprising an intake chamber 8 which receives the condensate through conduit 11, a reflux chamber 6 connected by conduit 12 to the vapour chamber 1, an off-take chamber 7 connected to product discharge conduit 13, and valve-members 9, 10 which operate to permit condensate to pass from the intake chamber 8 either to the reflux chamber 6 or to the off-take chamber 7. Valve-members 9, 10 cooperate with valveseats 22, 23 and are urged against the seats by springs 24, 25. The valve-members are movable axially against the action of the springs by solenoids 26, 27 operable by a timing device (not shown). As shown in Fig. 5 the reflux chamber 6 is open to intake chamber 8, and the off-take chamber 7 is closed to the intake chamber 8. While the divider 5 remains in this condition the condensate passing through conduit 11 flows through chamber 6 and conduit 12 and is delivered as reflux into vapour chamber 1. When the positions of valve-members 9, 10 are reversed, all the condensate entering chamber 8 flows out through chamber 7 and conduit 13. Conduit 12 is detachably connected to chamber 1, and conduit 11 is detachably connected to separator 2 so that the divider 5 can be detached as a unit from the distillation apparatus.
