Abstract

<PICT:0662983/III/1> In a still, the stream of condensate is divided by a valve comprising two relatively rotatable sleeves 16, 19 each of which has two ports 18 and 20, 21, and the ports in the sleeves co-operate in pairs so that, as the effective area of one pair increases, the other decreases; and the inlet pipe 12 for condensate leads to the interior of the inner sleeve whilst the outlet pipes communicate with the ports in the outer sleeve and lead, respectively, back into the still and to a product receiver. Several such dividers may be combined in series. The valve is housed in a closed vessel 10 containing a tray 15 communicating with pipe 13 so that outlet fluid from ports 21, 18 discharges into the tray and flows away through pipe 13 to the receiver. The fluid discharging through the other ports flows into the bottom of vessel 10 and is led away through the other outlet pipe (not shown) back into the still. An inspection window and heating or cooling pipes 32 are provided in the vessel 10, and a further pipe opens into the vessel above the valve to allow the dividing operation to be carried out at a super or sub-normal atmospheric pressure. The inner sleeve is rotated by means of a handle 25 carrying a pointer 26 running over a scale to show the ratio into which the stream is being divided. Set screws (not shown) engage a groove 29 in the inner sleeve and prevent the latter from rising.
