Abstract
1,182,787. Spring clips; stud and socket fastenings. F.T. PRODUCTS Ltd. 6 Nov., 1967 [23 Nov., 1966], No. 52382/66. Heading E2B. A resilient moulding fastener is formed by shearing and bending a strip of sheet metal, the fastener comprising a substantially flat body portion, a substantially flat stud retaining portion joined to but spaced from and overlying the body portion and lateral walls extending upwardly from opposite sides of the body portion towards the stud retaining portion, at least one of the lateral walls being inclined outwardly from the body portion to provide an undercut surface adapted to engage the moulding wherein the stud retaining portion is resiliently movable towards the body portion, both the body portion and the stud retaining portion are formed with aligned slots running out of at least one edge of the body portion and out of the stud retaining portion respectively and wherein the said slot in the stud retaining portion divides the stud retaining portion into two jaws 16, 16a which are resiliently movable to accept and thereafter retain the shank of a stud forced threebetween. In the construction shown the slots in both the body portion and the stud retaining portion run out at both edges of each so that they are divided throughout their lengths by the slots and the edges of the slot in the stud retaining portion are formed intermediate the length of the slot with opposed part circular recesses 18, 19 which engage the shank of the stud beneath its head. The body portion thus consists of two flanges 14, 14a and each of these is joined to a respective one of the jaws by the walls 15 or 15a. The walls are joined together by a portion 13 of the sheet metal at one end of the fastener. The slot 17 between the jaws has a tapering entry mouth to ease its engagement with the stud shank. The moulding is engaged with the lateral walls, the shape of the walls providing undercut surfaces engaged by edges of the moulding. In a modification the body portion is only partly divided by its slot and the jaws of the stud retaining portion are joined to the body portion by a member which connects one end of each to the non-slotted end of the body portion. In this construction the sides are not connected to the stud retaining portion. In a further construction the fastener is formed by bending the metal strip solely about parallel lines the body portion consisting of two flanges which are joined by the sides to the stud retaining portion the slot of which extends only along part of its length and terminates in a part circular aperture. In a further construction the fastener is again formed by bending the strip of sheet metal solely about parallel lines to approximately W formation so that the stud retaining portion is joined by depending portions to the body portion which consists of two spaced parts from the sides of which the sides extend. In this construction also the slot in the stud retaining portion extends only partly along its length and terminates in a part circular aperture. A construction is also described which is formed by bending the strip of sheet metal about parallel lines only but in which the slots in both the stud retaining portion and the body portion extend at right angles to the sides instead of parallel to them.
