[Also in Division C2] A crude mixture of cycloserine and O-carbamyl D-serine for use as an animal feed supplement is prepared by the following steps:- (a) cultivating a cycloserine producing strain of streptomyces, e.g. Streptomyces, orchidaceous NRRL 2454, S. virginiae or S. lavendulae, as disclosed in specification 929,043, in a nutrient fermentation medium to produce a beer containing solid cycloserine and O-carbamyl- D-serine, (b) adding to said beer a zinc compound having a nutritionally-acceptable anion in a mole ratio of from 0.5-2 of said zinc compound to I of cycloserine, (c) adjusting the pH of said beer to from 6.0 to 9.5 with calcium hydroxide, calcium oxide or calcium carbonate, (d) concentrating said beer at a temperature of up to 60 ‹C., at a pressure below atmospheric pressure to effect a reduction in volume of said beer to from 1.0% to 25% of the initial volume to produce a concentrated beer, and (e) recovering solids by spray or drum drying. The fermentation beer may be whole or filtered. In the case of the clarified beer, it is preferred to concentrate to 1.5 - 3.5% by volume, and a C 1 -C 3 alcohol or mixture thereof e.g. methanol and isopropanol (1:1), in a quantity of 1 to 2 times that of the concentrate, and cooling to 0-10‹C., in order to precipitate the mixed crude-antibiotics. The zinc compound is zinc oxide, zinc acetate, zinc propionate, zinc tartrate, zinc sulphate, zinc chloride or zinc nitrate. Specifications 768,007 and 775,946 are also referred to.
