Abstract

1,127,224. Antibiotic A3823. ELI LILLY & CO. 27 Sept., 1965 [28 Sept., 1964], No. 41083/65. Heading C2A. Antibiotic A3823, effective against bacterial and fungal plant and animal pathogens, is a white crystalline solid melting at 103-106‹ C.; soluble in alcohols, esters, ketones, chloroform, dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulphoxide; insoluble in water; having a titratable group of pK<SP>1</SP>a=6À65 in 66% aqueous dimethylformamide; [α]<SP>25</SP> D of 47.7 degrees in 1% CH 3 OH; empirical formula C 36 H 66 O 12 ; C=62À78%, H= 9.43%, O=26À61%; no absorption in U.V.; I.R. absorption as in Fig. I; stable in aqueous alkali; unstable in aqueous acid. Antibiotic A3823 is produced by cultivating Streptomyces cinnamonensis, e.g. ATCC 15413 or an A3823- producing mutant thereof, in a culture medium containing assimilable sources of carbon, nitrogen and inorganic salts under submerged aerobic conditions. The antibiotic may be recovered from the fermentation broth by the solvent extraction of the whole or clarified broth or the separated mycelium, e.g. extraction of the clarified broth by chloroform at pH 3.0, followed by chromatography on carbon and crystallization from aqueous methanol and then ether-petroleum ether mixture. An animal feed composition comprises an animal feed and antibiotic A3823. The composition may be used in the treatment of coccidiosis in poultry and as an antibacterial and antifungal drug against animal diseases.
