Abstract

1,182,674. Forming filamentary batts. CELANESE CORP. 26 July, 1967 [29 July, 1966], No. 34233/67. Headings D1F, D1N and D1R. A process for the production of a batting comprises continuously feeeding on to a moving surface a continuous web of crimped filaments which are generally parallel to the length of the web, which web is traversed across the surface to be deposited in partly overlapping folds, gaseous currents being used to determine the length of the web laid before each fold occurs. The web may be fed to the moving surface through an oscillating chute which confines the web sufficiently for a current of air to emerge with the web and carry the web beyond the point it would reach at the end of each oscillation by falling from the chute. Alternatively, the chute may be stationary, and gaseous blasts may be directed towards the web to force it beyond the position it would take in free fall. A pad for filling a cushion or like article is preferably made by folding or rolling a randomly folded web inside a batt made by the above process.
