In a downwardly concave furnace roof comprising bricks 1 arranged in concentric rings as described in the Parent Specification 1,119,322, the central part of the furnace roof is formed of uncased basic bricks laid up with a mortar comprising one or more of calcined fire clay, calcined bauxite, chrome ore or magnesite and a suitable binder.
