Abstract

1,182,099. Preparation of L-arabinose. SLOVENSKA AKADEMIA VED. 19 Feb., 1968. [6 April, 1967], No. 7945/68. Heading C2C. L-arabinose is prepared by de-esterifying pectin in sliced sugar beet by means of an acid or alkali, hydrolysing the mixture with acid, separating residual material, neutralizing the liquid from the hydrolyped mixture, separating any precipitate formed, eliminating saccharides accompanying L-arabinose in the liquid from the hydrolysis mixture, concentrating the mixture, clarifying the concentrated mixture by means of a C 1-4 saturated monohydric alcohol and crystallizing L-arabinose from the resulting alcoholic solution. The hydrolysis is preferably effected by heating for at least 4 hours at a temperature of at least 80‹ C. with a solution of H 2 SO 4 or by counterflow with an acid. The saccharides accompanying L-arabinose may be eliminated by the action of a yeast and after concentration the mixture is preferably clarified by means of a 3- to 5-fold volume of hot ethanol or methanol.
