Abstract
Itaconic acid and salts thereof are prepared by submerged aerobic fermentation of a carbohydrate medium in which beet molasses are the source of 10 to 30% by weight of the carbohydrate using a mycetes organism, e.g. an itaconic producing strain of Aspergillus, e.g. of A. itaconicus or A. terreus. The itaconic acid may be partially neutralised during the fermentation. The remainder of the carbohydrate apart from the beet molasses may be sucrose, glucose, invert sugar or, preferably, cane molasses. The beet molasses may be blended direct with the remainder of the carbohydrate in preparing the medium, but is conveniently employed as the primary carbohydrate source in the submerged aerobic growth of an inoculum of the micro-organism and this inoculum is then transferred to a cane molasses medium to initiate fermentation. The separate beet and cane molasses concentrations and the proportion of inoculum are selected to give the necessary proportion of beet molasses to provide 10 to 30% of the total carbohydrate.
