A piston and ring assembly comprises a ring 12 of isosceles triangular cross-section having an obtuse apex angle, the base of the triangle forming a cylindrical cylinder-engaging surface 16 and the ring being housed in a piston groove 13 of complemental V-section having an oil drainage hole or holes 18 leading to the interior of the piston. The ring 12, which may be truncated as shown by the broken line 15, acts as an oil scraper and bearing ring.
