Abstract

1,181,930. Castings; extracting and cleaning. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. 13 Feb., 1968 [23 Feb., 1967], No. 7085/68. Heading B3F. Castings, with a tightly adherent rust-resisting oxide coating, are cleaned of adhering sand, after removal from their shell moulds, by impinging a plurality of air streams over all of their surface area. The castings are cleaned at a temperature above ambient, preferably 600‹ to 800‹ F. In Fig. 2 a cast crank-shaft 13 is carried by a conveyer 12 through a booth 14. In the booth 14 are two air manifolds 16 each with a plurality of nozzles 17 which direct compressed air on to the casting surfaces. The compressed air is supplied to the manifold at 15 to 40 p.s.i.g. Preferably the nozzles 17 are spaced a distance of 3 to 6 inches from the casting surfaces.
