Abstract
1,181,464. Boom safety devices; taking up slack in flexible elements. RUSTON BUCYRUS Ltd. 29 April, 1968 [15 May, 1967], No. 20151/68. Heading B8B. A back stop apparatus for a crane boom 2 comprises a stop cable 6 which passes around a sheave 8 on a rotatable support frame 1 and is attached at both ends to the boom, the cable being associated with a slack take-up device which is mounted on the boom and operates during boom luffing and during retraction of the boom for transportation. In operation, the boom 2 pivots at 3 relative to the frame 1 and is prevented from passing through the vertical position by the cable 6 connected to the boom at 7 and to a slack take-up sheave 10. The latter is biased by a tension spring 13 in the cable wind-up direction and the circumference of the sheave is such that one revolution thereof will accumulate the full amount of slack developed. With the boom in the lowered position, it may be retracted by uncoupling the boom 2 from the frame 1 and swinging the base of the boom, which is pivotally attached to a pair of retracting arms 4, through 180 degrees about a pivot point 5 of the arms 4.
