Abstract

A folding tower crane comprises a tower and a jib 11 which are mounted on a base 2 so that they can be pivoted between a collapsed condition in which the jib lies horizontally along the tower and an erect condition in which the jib extends laterally from the erect tower, and a cable 15, 40 extending over the tower and round a pulley 34 to a member 31 connecting it to another cable 28, the member 31 being attachable to the base, whereby with the member 31 so attached the cable 28 can be used to pivot the tower and with the member 31 unattached and the tower erect the cable 28 can be used to pivot the jib. The tower has two pivotally interconnected parts 4, 6 which are moved relative to each other by rods 20, 23, 24 when the tower is pivoted relative to the base, and which are held in alignment by releasable locking means 10a, 10b. The cable 28 is operated by a winch 27. The cable part 40 may be temporarily disconnected from the part 15 and connected to a ballast block pivoted to the base so that the ballast block can be pivoted by the winch 27 to an operational position, Fig. 3 (not shown). The cable parts 15, 40 are interconnected by a part 16 which can be secured to the base 2 to retain the jib in its erected condition. In a modification, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown), the cable part 40 passes round a pulley on a member equivalent to the member 31 to an anchorage on the base 2.
