Moisture or dirt is excluded from an hydraulic cylinder by an envelope or bellows 1 having a self-suporting compensating portion 2 which retains its axial length when the envelope or bellows is compressed in accordance with the piston movements. The compensating portion 2 is stiffened by ribs 3 and no breathing holes are necessary, the compensating portion being capable of expanding radially when a large volume of air enters.
