Abstract

1,180,714. Aerials. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 28 May, 1968 [27 June, 1967], No. 25488/68. Heading H4A. [Also in Division H1] Relates to directional couplers for feeding the radiating elements of a doubly-dispersive, frequency-scanned planar array. The array operates in a dual mode to provide two separately controlled cross-scanning beams. A matrix of square-sectioned radiating waveguides 10 is fed by two orthogonal arrays of feeders, each array comprising pairs of rectangular waveguides, e.g. 11, 12 and 14, 15, coupled to the opposite walls of waveguides 10 forming a single row (or column) of the matrix. Feeders 11, 12 (or 14, 15) of each pair are coupled to a common source, by, e.g., a magic-T, and have such phase relationship that a TE 01 (or TE 10 ) mode is generated in the corresponding radiating waveguides 10, the mode generated by feeders 11, 12 being orthogonal to that generated by feeders 14, 15. The couplers have directional properties (see Division H1) so that energy is propagated in one direction only in the radiating elements 10.
