Abstract
1,180,490. Cold separation of gas mixtures. MESSER GRIESHEIM G.m.b.H. 13 Nov., 1968 [15 Nov., 1967; 26 Jan., 1968], No. 53885/68. Heading F4P. A stream 12, Fig. 1, of compressed gas mixture, e.g. methane and nitrogen to be rectified is divided into first and second portions 3, 6 the first portion is expanded at 1 and either gives up cold in a heat exchanger 2 to the second portion and is then fed as a liquid-poor vapour to a column 4 whilst the so-cooled second portion is expanded at 5 and fed as a liquid-rich vapour into column 4 above the entry point of the first portion or the expanded first portion gives up cold in exchanger 2, Fig. 4, to the undivided stream which latter is then divided into said first portion 3 which is expanded at 1, warmed at 2 and fed to the column 4 and into the second portion 6 which is expanded at 5 and fed to the column 4 above the entry point of the first portion.
