Abstract

1392294 Separation of air BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 28 June 1972 [28 June 1971] 30148/71 Heading F4P In a process for the separation of air in which a stream of compressed air is led via heat exchangers 15, 18 to a single stage rectification column 19 to produce a liquid oxygen fraction at 43 and a gaseous nitrogen fraction, a part of the latter is expanded in a turbine 25 to provide the cold for the h.e.'s 15, 18, the remainder of the nitrogen passing through the h.e.'s unexpanded, at least a portion of the latter then being compressed to a pressure greater than that of the column 19 to form a reboil stream a portion of which is used to vaporize a portion of the liquid oxygen fraction in heat exchanger 33. The reboil stream is divided into two streams after initial compression at 29, one stream passing through h.e.'s 15, 18, the other being further compressed at 31 before passing through h.e. 33 and an expansion valve 35 to rejoin the first stream. After passing through the reboiler 21 the reboil stream is passed through heat exchanger 23 and expanded at valve 37 into a separator 39, the gas being fed to the nitrogen line, the liquid being refluxed or tapped off at 41. Product nitrogen gas is removed at 27. The system may operate at two different pressures to vary the proportions of the products by passing the incoming air through one or both compressors 11, 13. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), two further h.e.'s (16, 17) are interposed between the h.e.'s 15 and 18, and additional cooling is provided by work expanding a portion of the first reboil stream as it emerges from h.e. 15, the expanded stream being fed into the unexpanded part of the nitrogen fraction as it enters h.e. (16). The liquid nitrogen in separator 39 is, in this case, fed to a further h.e. (40) and then expanded through a valve (42) into a second separator 44, the vapour from which is fed via h.e. (40) and 23 into the expanded nitrogen stream issuing from turbine 25.
