Abstract
1,109,772. Cold separation of gas mixtures. MESSER GRIESHEIM G.m.b.H. 30 Jan., 1967 [5 Feb., 1966], No. 4473/67. Heading F4P. Cooling of the reflux condenser 9 of a hydrocarbon gas mixture rectification column 7 is effected at least in part by withdrawing liquid C 1 and C 2 hydrocarbons from the base of the column, expanding of a valve 16 and thereafter passing it through the condenser 9 thereby liquefying effluent gas which is then separated at 11 into liquid for use as reflux and into gas (mostly methane). The cold content of the latter is recovered in a last exchanger 5 traversed by feed gas mixture. Evaporated sump liquid is expanded at a valve 32 and is joined by any sump liquid not having traversed condenser 9 before being fed to a demethanizer column 21. Product methane gas withdrawn through a line 25 and warmed in exchanger 5 is recompressed at 27 and added to the methane gas from column 7, and the combined methane streams are returned to a natural gas main 1 downstream of the withdrawal point for the feed to the separating apparatus. In a modification a first portion of the feed mixture is workexpanded in a turbine (35), Fig. 2 (not shown), and remainder is expanded at a valve (39) before passing to the column 7.
