Abstract

1,180,063. Extruding; making pressure vessels. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 26 Jan., 1967 [3 Feb., 1966], No. 3933/67. Headings B3A and B3P A high-pressure chamber, particularly for hydrostatic extrusion, comprises an inner wall 12 which is translatable in response to pressure in its interior space 11, a fixed support member 41 and movable means such as 31, 32 coupling the inner wall to the support whereby translation of the inner wall produces an inwardlyacting pressure thereon to counteract the internal pressure tending to expand it. The chamber is used for the hydrostatic extrusion of a billet 16, which may be of copper, through die orifice 14 into a further pressurized space 17. Fluid in spaces 11, 17 is pressurized by rams 18, 19 respectively. Inner wall 12 is supported by concentric sleeves 31, 32 with flanges 33, 34 engaging a pressure transmitting medium 37, 38, 39 which may be a viscous liquid, neoprene or indium. Build-up of pressure in space 11 produces forces A, B which compress the medium 37-39 to produce radial forces C, D. The chamber may be of circular, rectangular or square cross-section and may also be used for bending a workpiece. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,102,702.
