Novel acid addition salts of N-[2-(p-chloro-α- phenylbenzyloxy)ethyl] - piperidine and the acids: tannic acid, maleic acid, o-(p-hydroxybenzoyl) benzoic acid, 4<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>11</SP>-dihydroxytriphenylmethane - 2 - carboxylic acid, 4,4<SP>1 </SP>- methylenebis - 3 - hydroxy - 2 - naphthoic acid and the sodium acid salt of the latter acid are prepared by reacting a solution of N-[2-(p-cbloro-α- phenylbenzyloxy)ethyl] piperidine with a solution of the appropriate free acid or by mixing a water-soluble salt of N-[2-(p-chloro-α-phenylbenzyloxy)ethyl] piperidine with a solution of a salt of the appropriate acid. Pharmaceutical compositions effective as an antitussive comprise the above acid addition salts as the active ingredient are made up in combination with acceptable carriers, excipi. ents, preservatives or suspension stabilizers and may be administered as a powder, aqueous suspension or syrup.
