Abstract
1,179,553. Cooling dynamo-electric machines. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 21 March, 1967 [22 Dec., 1965], No. 54328/65. Heading H2A. The stator winding of an electrical machine is cooled by passing coolant through the hollow conductors 2a, 3a and bending the end-windings axially outwards to fit tightly in a metal ferrule 4 having a tubular extension which seats in a hole in an insulating ring 5, this forming one wall of a coolant carrying channel 6a. As shown, the insulating ring 5 is secured in fluid-tight manner to the walls of a channel formed on the inner side of an end-plate of the machine. In a modification the ring 5 is itself conducting, in which case the ferrules 4 are held in holes therein by insulating packing. If there are four or more conductors per slot then either two rings 5 are provided to carry the required number of ferrules, or alternatively, the coolant is passed through several coil sides in series so that fewer ferrules are required. The coolant emerges in a channel at the other end of the machine and is then passed to a heat-exchanger.
