Abstract
1,179,349. Optical apparatus. AMERICAN OPTICAL CORP. Sept. 13, 1967, No. 41779/67. Heading G2J. [Also in Division G1]. In an optical heterodyne system the wavefronts of the interfering beams are made accurately parallel by passing the beams through a waveguide which supports only one mode or a plurality of modes one of which may be subsequently selected. Beams from HeNe gas lasers 11, 12 operating at slightly different frequencies near the 6300Š line are directed by a beam splitter 15 and a reversed microscope objective 20 on to a waveguide 19. The waveguide comprises a 2 micron diameter filament 21 of refractive index 1À54 surrounded by cladding 22 of refractive index 1À52. The guide is surrounded by black glass of refractive index greater than 1À52. The waveguide supports and aligns the HE11 of the two beams and the light leaving the waveguide falls on a photo-multiplier feeding the circuit tuned to the difference frequency of the beams. The waveguide may be of parallel layers instead of concentric cylinders, in which case mode selection takes place in only on direction. If the waveguide supports more than one mode, one mode may be selected by relying on the fact that different modes leave the waveguide at different angles to the axis. The beams need not be coherent one need not even be monochromatic.
