Abstract

1,106,246. Interferometers. BRITISH SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov.16, 1966 [Sept.6, 1965], No.38028/65. Heading G2J. In an interferometer for testing the surface of a lens, monochromatic light is directed normally on to both the lens surface 12 and the master surface 13 of a reference plate 16, the lens and test plate being spaced apart. A correction plate 14 is oiled to the lens under test to provide the necessary concentric system. Concave lens surfaces are tested by reflection alone, a concentric reference plate being placed in front of the lens. As shown, light from source 9 is directed through microscope objective 11 and diverges from a focal point to the test surface. Reflected light returns through semi-silvered mirror 10 to eye-piece 18. The source 9 may be a mercury lamp or an HeNe gas laser. The radius of curvature of a test lens may be determined by measurement of the gap between the lens and a reference surface of known curvature.
