In coating apparatus comprising an application roller 12, a feed or support roller 2 and a proportioning roller 14 adjustable relative to the application roller, either the application roller or the proportioning roller is provided with a proud patterned surface with the depressed parts of the pattern mutually interconnected. The applicator roll may be patterned and the proportioning roller provided with a smooth metal jacket or the proportioning roller may be patterned and the applicator roller have a smooth rubberised jacket. The applicator roller may be driven at peripheral speeds adjustable between one third higher and one third lower than the peripheral speed of the feed roller and the latter can be driven in reverse direction to reverse the feed direction of articles to be coated. The articles may be fed to and delivered from the applicator roller by separate conveyor belts or a single conveyor belt may pass from the feed side to the discharge side of the applicator roller.
