Abstract

In a metal cooled nuclear reactor, the fuel plate 1 is cooled by liquid flowing downwardly over the fuel surface from the upper trough 5 to the trough 7. The steel casing 2 has external, vertical, capillary grooves 3 which draw the liquid from the upper trough. Unevaporated liquid is delivered into the lower trough from the edge 6. The vapour generated in the capillaries is supplied to a heat exchanger, the condensate from which is returned to fuel element. The fuel elements may be inclined to the vertical. If the energy removal in the heat exchanger is large enough, the rate of flow of vapour can be of the same order as the speed of sound.
