Abstract
1,178,535. Rolling; making heat exchangers. IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd. 17 July, 1967 [11 Aug., 1966], No. 36007/66. Headings B3A and B3M. Two or more layers of metal, the outermost layers of which are of the same metal, are bonded together by passing the layers between the rolls 1 and 2 of a pendulum mill, the layers being subjected by the rolls to simultaneous pressure and heat during rolling. In an example, two layers 15 of titanium are bonded to a central layer 16 of aluminium, the layers, after cleaning and assembly, being sealed by a thermoplastic sealing compound 18. The compound softens during the rolling and falls from the assembly. The assembly is fed towards the rolls at 2 feet/min., while the rolls oscillate at a speed of 340 ft./min. The layers need not have their surfaces cleaned to remove oxidation before the rolling step, but in this case the resulting bond is not so strong. In a further example, two layers of aluminium are bonded together after selectively coating the surface of one layer with stop-weld material and sealing the edges of the layers together as before. The finished strip is stored as a coil and subsequently cut into lengths suitable for heat exchanger panels, the lengths finally being expanded by air or hydraulic pressure to produce desired passageways between the layers.
